Film maker Michael Soyannwo has accused the BBC of providing limited opportunities to new or black-owned production companies. Speaking with talkRADIO’s Ian Collins, he said the broadcaster was “wholly inaccessible to people outside a certain circle of influence”. “If you’re an outsider and if you’re a young production company or, dare I say a black production company, they are inherently suspicious,” he said. Mr Soyannwo added that “systemic racism” exists within the media because bosses assume that projects pitched by black producers are automatically “urban”. His comments come as the BBC announced it will set aside £100 million to create “diverse and inclusive content”. The broadcaster’s director-general Tony Hall, said the killing of George Floyd had a “profound impact on all of us”. He said: “This is our response, it’s going to drive change in what we make and who makes it. It’s a big leap forward – and we’ll have more to announce in the coming weeks.”
