Then you know one of the biggest issues is the hissing noise that gets included. But did you know there's a way to overcome this problem? Introducing the Dolby noise reduction system. This system performs two functions. First, it boosts the energy of audio signals. It also improves the signal-to-noise ratio of audio signals, specifically in the high-frequency spectrum. Audio signal energy is primarily focused on the low-frequency area of the spectrum. This is the frequency section that outputs quality and 'feel'. It usually has a lower energy level. Even the smallest volume of noise can affect its quality. The signal-to-noise ratio is much lower in the higher-frequency parts during tape playback. You can hear noise much more clearly in the higher-frequency parts. That's why the signal energy doesn't do a good job of masking it. So how does the Dolby noise reduction system work? This is what happens before the signal is even copied or recorded. The system focuses on and improves the low-energy sections of a high-frequency signal. Then, during recording, it undergoes processing and encoding. It employs a pre-emphasis filter and dynamic range compression. During playback, decoding of the audio signal takes place. A de-emphasis filter and a decompression circuit are ;used to avoid any audio distortion. It's a delicate dance between the encoder and decoder. Dolby noise-reduction systems include Dolby A, Dolby B Dolby C, Dolby SR, and Dolby S. So, what's the difference between them? Their main difference is in the band number and pre-emphasis method. Dolby A was created for professional use. It splits the signal spectrum into four frequency bands. It offers a 10 to 15 dB gain for each band. This is done if the signal level drops 45 dB below the maximum recording level. Dolby B is used for consumer audio systems. It uses only two bands. It offers a maximum boost of 10 dB if the signal level is 45 dB below the maximum recording level. Dolby C is also used in consumer systems and has two bands. It offers a maximum boost of 20 dB when the signal level is 45 dB below the maximum recording level. Dolby SR is Dolby's second professional noise reduction system after Dolby A. It's created to be used with multi-track equipment. It reduces noise up to 25 dB on the high-frequency side. Finally, Dolby S is an improvement of Dolby C. It is aimed at consumers.
