Since the Moscow terror attack on Crocus City Hall in March 2024, which left over 140 dead and was claimed by ISIS, Central Asia migrants in Russia have faced rising harassment and violence. Four Tajik suspects were arrested but have yet to face trial. Experts say the climate in Russia has worsened for ethnic minorities, with harsher treatment of migrants from Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan. New government rules have made it harder to employ migrant workers. A Human Rights Watch report points to a surge in xenophobia, including ethnic profiling, arbitrary arrests, and abuse by far-right groups. One political analyst noted that pressure on Muslims in Russia existed even before the Crocus City Hall attack. The mother of one of the suspects says she hasn’t heard from her son in a year and believes he’s innocent. Authorities ended their investigation in February, with at least 23 people detained. It’s unclear how many of the estimated 3 million Central Asia migrants in Russia may have left due to the growing crackdown. #moscowattack #russianews
