8 Stimmungsbilder, Op. 1 (1902) Nikolai Medtner (1880 - 1951) Craig Daffron Jordan, piano I. Prologue: Andante cantabile 00:01 II. Allegro con impeto 05:19 III. Maestoso freddo 07:00 IV. Andantino con moto 09:44 V. Andante 13:12 VI. Allegro con humore 15:54 VII. Allegro con ira 17:59 VIII. Allegro con grazia – quasi valse 19:38 Medtner’s first published work consists of eight short “Mood Pictures” written between the years 1895 and 1902. Medtner provides epitaphs before the first and the fifth pieces from a poem titled “The Angel” by Russian poet, Mikhail Lermontov. This poem plays a major role in the construction of the first piece which also serves as a prologue to the entire set of pieces. Medtner also arranged the Prologue later to be sung with lyrics from “The Angel.” Throughout the 8 Stimmungsbilder, Medtner uses descriptors such as “joking,” “passionately,” “tranquil then little by little more agitated,” “with despair,” and “majestically cold,” to guide the performer. Medtner’s use of unorthodox musical descriptors displays his proficiency and passion for storytelling even as a young composer. Rachmaninov later would say that no one could tell stories like Medtner. DMA Qualifying Recital Tuesday, April 18th, 2023, at 7:30 PM Recital Hall University of Iowa
