There is seemingly no end to the potentially hazardous social media challenges which disturbed young people will participate in these days. The most recent to go viral sees teens snort entire condoms up their noses, only to pull them out of their mouths. Yes, you read that correctly. Earlier this year, a viral video trend dubbed the “Tide Pod Challenge” made headlines as dozens of teens posted videos of themselves chewing and swallowing laundry detergent. Health officials subsequently reported more than 40 cases of teens getting sick from the highly concentrated detergent that can cause chemical burns when ingested. This would have seemed difficult to top in terms of stupidity, but apparently, wayward teens on social media have found something even more absurd to inhale: Condoms. The Condom Challenge has been around for more than a decade, with YouTube videos dating back to 2007. One channel, which was created in 2013, has more than 100 videos depicting people participating in the challenge by snorting unwrapped condoms up their nostrils and pulling them out their mouths. Bruce Lee, an associated professor at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, addressed the sickening trend in an opinion piece for Forbes which was published on Saturday. “When is using a condom a bad idea? When you are trying to snort it up your nose and pull it out through your mouth,” he wrote. “Even if you manage to successfully pull the condom out through your mouth, inhaling a condom up your nose would be very uncomfortable and potentially quite painful,” added Lee. “Would it really be worth all that just to get more likes and views?” he pondered. For some, apparently, the answer is yes. Health experts have urged people to stop participating in the potentially dangerous trend as snorting condoms is a choking hazard — the rubber could potentially get caught in a person’s airway and block their ability to breathe. Furthermore, the spermicidal lubricant found on most condoms can irritate the inner lining of the nose and cause allergic reaction or infection. Accidentally swallowing the condom could also lead to serious complications. In 2016, a woman from Cameroon accidentally swallowed a condom and had to have it surgically removed from her appendix after it caused appendicitis. Another woman developed pneumonia after accidentally swallowing a condom, according to a 2004 report in an Indian medical journal. All that having been said, no one should have to be warned not to snort a condom up their nose because of the obvious risks. That much should be obvious, but here we are. It’s a disconcerting thought when you consider the fact that these imbeciles are the future of our nation. How did we go from storming the beaches of Normandy and sending a man to space, to snorting Tide Pods and pulling condoms out of our noses in just a few generations?
