Baby chimp Jeff climbs fast, leaving adult Sally behind. Stevie helps him down. Zee Zee suddenly rushes in to protect her daughter. What did she see? Chester Zoo chimpanzee baby Jeff is climbing a tree, with adult Sally following behind. But Jeff is far too quick for her, so she climbs back down—she knows when she's beat. Jeff's sister, Stevie, is also climbing nearby. They've cut back the trees on Chimpanzee Island since my last visit, making it easier to see them when they're outside, though they still have their hiding places and plenty of trees to climb. Stevie helps Jeff with the final jump to the ground, where he plays and jumps around. Meanwhile, Stevie spots something under a bush. Sally watches from a rock, but suddenly, mum Zee Zee rushes in, stops Stevie, and holds her daughter back. I’m not sure what they’ve seen, but Zee Zee’s protective instincts kicked in. Jeff quickly jumps onto his mum’s back, feeling safe there. Zee Zee investigates, then carries Jeff away—but not before circling around for another look from the other side. I wonder what it was. These chimpanzees are from Chester Zoo in England and were featured in the popular TV series The Secret Life of the Zoo.
