All the R107 manuals and resources in one place — free and online. 👉 https://TonyLiveTV.com In this video I try a Heli-Coil and a Time-Sert and install them using only hand tools. No drill will be used in this video. Warning, this video is too long. I'm not good at editing and I talk to much. The manual says that I will be reconditioning the "threaded bores for the intermediate flange and transmission mounting". One of the threaded bolt holes used to mount the transmission to the engine block has stripped its threads. The Mercedes-Benz manual says the fix is to use Heli-Coil, but that was years ago when Mercedes-Benz used Heli-Coil during the manufacturing process. Today there are all kinds of methods used to repair threads. One of the most popular methods used is called the Time-Sert. Since I have never used either product before I thought I should try them both and see for myself which is better. There are videos comparing the strength of these two thread repair methods (both better than original), but I have other considerations than this. I will say they are both equally as strong. In fact, the Heli-Coil may be better in many ways. My videos are not sponsored by anyone. The products and tools I use are products and tools I have purchased with my own money. Mercedes recommends that you use Heli-coil so I purchased the Heli-Coil 5546-10 M10 x 1.5 Metric Coarse Thread Repair Kit: https://amzn.to/39c5MM8 If going with the Heli-coil you'll also need a good 13/32 drill bit. I purchased the BOSCH CO2153 13/32 In. x 5-1/4 In. Cobalt Drill Bit and it cuts like butter: https://amzn.to/3L34KiT AND you'll need 20mm long inserts. I found the Helical Insert: M10 x 1.5 Internal Thread Size, 12.5 mm Free Coil Dia., 10 PK on Grainger: https://www.grainger.com/product/GRAI... I was not totally convinced the Heli-coil was the best way to go. The machinist I have been working with says he uses Time-Serts in about 80% of all thread repairs. In fact, he had already repaired my engine block using 2 stainless steel Time-Serts. Based on what he said and what others are doing, I purchase the TIME-SERT M10 X 1.50 Metric Thread Repair Kit. It's expensive, but it is top quality that's for sure. You'll see in this video: https://amzn.to/3l1INpO I then needed to purchase 20mm stainless steel Time-Sert inserts. I found them on Ebay from the threaddoctor: https://t.ly/a1pi I used the Forney 20857 Tap Magic Industrial Pro Cutting Fluid for the drill, the tap and the Time-Sert installation tool. The one I purchased is the Lang Tools 2584 15-Piece Metric Thread Restorer Set and I feel it is perfect. It is machined to tight tolerances and does exactly what it is support to do. In the video I use a cheap caliper and I absolutely hate it so I am not going to include a link to that tool. Instead I'm including a link to the new one I recently purchased.
