Introduction to Buckling of Elastic Columns

This video lecture is from the UIUC engineering course SE 410, Component Design, and was recorded for Fall semester 2020. Students in this course have already taken multiple courses in solid mechanics. This lecture refreshes student buckling analysis knowledge, including the derivation of the Euler buckling formula from ordinary differential equations, and sets the stage for a deeper dive into more advanced buckling analysis topics (such as nonlinear postbuckling behavior and buckling of shells) and design of components that may experience buckling failure. The subsequent lectures on this topic are available to students enrolled in SE 410.
