This song deals with loss, depression, regret, and all the emotions involved when a loved one passes, and is based on personal life experience. We hope it will help anyone going through that horrible situation, if only to know that they are not alone in their grief and feelings. In this case, it was my own personal family loss, as well as impending ones. I'm glad I didn't know exactly how much those losses would be. But there are also musical influences that helped me to write this. Great songwriters and performers like Paul Simon, Billie Holiday, Great Big Sea, BB King, Buddy Guy, the Gershwin brothers, Irving Berlin and Cole Porter. Of course, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and Pete Townshend's wonderful lyrics for the Who, all play a part. Gilbert O' Sullivan, Don McLean, and Janis Ian, with their respective hits are masterclasses in how to write sad but relatable songs. I realize those are older writers - there are many, many newer ones I'm not mentioning and I apologize for that. Grief and loss know no "generation", they are human experiences.
