WASTE, CARBON, WATER: You can buy a dress for £3.00, but what is the true cost? The world now consumes about 80 billion new pieces of clothing every year. This is 400% more than the amount we consumed just two decades ago WASTE In the UK, we are buying twice as much clothing as we were 15 years ago, and an average 30% of each wardrobe has not been worn in a year Worldwide, fewer than one per cent of garments are recycled into new clothing each year, and only 20% of textiles are recycled at all In the UK £140m worth of clothing goes to landfill each year CARBON Textile production accounts for more greenhouse gas emissions than all flights and shipping combined. -- It's estimated that the fashion industry may use quarter of world’s carbon budget by 2050 Emissions from this sector are to rise by more than 60 per cent by 2030 WATER It takes between 10,000 and 20,000 litres of water to grow and produce 1kg of cotton (1 shirt and 1 pair of jeans). In the UK, the average person uses about 142 litres of water each day. That means 70 days worth of water use for one person goes into just 2 garments. - Textiles are the largest source of microplastics, accounting for 34.8% of global microplastic pollution. Every year, around half a million tonnes of microfibers released by washed garments contribute to ocean pollution – 16 times more than plastic microbeads from cosmetics We can't go on like this.
