Hey! If you're a fan of Flook, this tutorial is for you! Get a whistle and play along! Members (click on JOIN) get a tutorial like this every month! This is The North Star Jig, the first tune in the Ballybrolly Jigs by Flook, from their Rubai album. Brian Finnegan uses an Eb whistle there, but using a D whistle (the most common key) is absolutely fine unless you want to play along with the original Flook recording. In this case you can also get an Eb whistle or you can use software to modify the pitch of the original Flook recording. In any case, this is the fingering that Brian Finnegan uses for this tune and the fingering that you'll always be using, no matter the key of your whistle (cool, right?). Everything in Irish music is optional and changes every time you play (you never play anything the same way twice), so, even though I tried to reproduce what Brian Finnegan does as best I could, please take this as a useful learning guide, but never as a mandatory way. In fact, Brian himself changes what he does in this tune every repetition, so not everything in this tutorial will always be exactly the way he does it. Improvisation is actually an important part in Irish music. Note: the hole you use for cuts is up to you also (I normally use the G hole, but some people use the B hole instead, and I suspect this is the way Brian Finnegan is doing it here). Any questions you may have, just comment below. And remember that if you join the TinWhistler channel (or, alternatively, become our patron on Patreon), you'll get tutorials like this every month, as well as other rewards (depending on your membership level).
