63% of Americans say that they experience the most happiness and enjoyment without a lot of stress and worry during the holiday season. That statistic proves that, to many, it’s truly the most wonderful time of the year. However, that still leaves another 47% of Americans not feeling happy or enjoying their time. This could be for a lot of different reasons but the majority of those feel this way because they’re stuck spending their holiday season in a hospital recovering from a surgery or illness. But it doesn’t have to be this way. If you work at or run a hospital, there are certain things you can do to make the holiday season more enjoyable for your patients and your staff. LINKS: ____________________________________________ https://etactics.com/blog/how-to-cele... ____________________________________________ The first and easiest way to bring holiday cheer to your hospital patients is by decorating. There are literally thousands of ways to decorate a hospital. You could string lights up throughout the halls and within rooms, decorate themed trees for every department, place ceramic villages on help desks, the list goes on and on. While decorating the building is great, why not include participation from your patients? After all, if they’re spending their holidays at your hospital, they won’t be able to decorate their own house. Allow your patients to decorate your trees or plan a week where your staff goes around and helps them decorate their rooms to their liking. A second easy way to spread holiday cheer at a hospital is to offer holiday craft classes. There’s a lot of tradition and fun that comes along with the holidays. Some of your patients spend their time making ornaments or baking sweet treats with their grandkids. It’d be upsetting if they can’t continue these cornerstone traditions so offer crafting classes. You could do ornament decorating very easily. Baking might get a little tricky, using your cafeteria to bake cookies made by your ill patients isn’t safe or sanitary. Instead, you could have them decorate gingerbread houses. Since they can keep those in their rooms, they won’t spread germs. A third thing you can do at your hospital to bring the holiday spirit is to bring special visitors or carolers. Although it’s largely considered such a happy time, the holidays can be awfully lonely to some. To help lonely patients, organize visitors for patients so that they know people care about them. Some schools partner with children’s hospitals or nursing homes to visit patients. A radio station in New Jersey will even take a group of carolers and visit multiple healthcare facilities and sing to patients. If you have religious patients you could even contact local churches for visits. Our fourth way to spread holiday cheer at a hospital is by having Santa visit. Santa is a very important visitor for your children patients. It’s 2019 and many department stores still have places to take pictures with Santa. That’s because it’s a great way to get kids to realize the magic of the holidays. Since your children patients can’t go out and find Santa, bring him to them. Set up an area to take photos or host a breakfast with him so all of the families can participate. One hospital, in particular, is taking a different approach to a Santa visit this year. Shriners Hospital for Children teamed up with NTT Limited to bring Saint Nick to the screens of their patients through telehealth technology. The final and most important way to spread holiday cheer at your hospital is by giving gifts. Gifts are a huge part of the holiday season. But before you think about giving gifts to your patients, understand the demographics of your patients because different religious groups have different gift-giving traditions. Now, buying a gift for every patient you have may not be plausible. But you could partner with a local charity group who could sponsor patients and buy gifts for them. In Delaware City, community members help hospital residents through Adopt-A-Resident. In this program sponsors receive the wish list of a patient, then buy and deliver their items in gift bags. Spending the entire holiday season in a hospital or long-term healthcare facility is not something anyone looks forward to, but it happens. But there are fun things you can do with these patients to make their time a little more enjoyable throughout the season. ► If you’d like to learn more about how doctors are affected by depression, reach out to Etactics @ https://www.etactics.com ►Subscribe: https://rb.gy/pso1fq to learn more tips and tricks in healthcare, health IT, and cybersecurity. ►Find us on LinkedIn: / etactics-inc ►Find us on Facebook: / etacticsinc • How To Celebrate The Holidays At a Hospital #patientengagement #hospitals #healthcare
