Recently, I went out to the water to "wet the whistle." Dad used to use this a lot but mainly when he drank like after he had finished doing the lawns. Southerlies were blowing and so, the north side of the peninsula was the place to go as I snorkel out on the east coast and my usual spot was choppy due to the winds but hop over onto the other side and the waters calm, flat and good visiblility. It's been about two to three months since I was last in the water due to ill health and a very sore back. So, I was excited to get out and feel the water. March is the end of our summer and beginning of our autumn here in New Zealand. However, the temperature in the water is still warm at 21 degrees celsius - I will don a wetsuit at 13 degrees hahaha I wear layers at 14 degrees and as long as I am moving, I am fine. I stayed fairly close to shore due to a few reasons and just had a nosey and play in the current and at the terrain below. It's not really much here as this is usually the 'T' section to head out left or right but it's right next to a reef where the waves break and those waves can be quite strong and big depending on tide. I like looking around the terrain because these are usually the only times you can see what's around there after the waves die down. I just collected a sack of kina, which I gave to family who came out with me and they said that some had roe and some didn't but that the roe was creamy. I always ask family to send me photos of the roe so I can remember for future reference as to the area, time of year and month but no - they hardly send them unless I badger them. I always forget to break open the kina as well. My tow float and sack worked nicely with my little anchor. I set my anchor length to approximately three metres as I'm not allowed to dive deeper than four metres - so, I have little boundaries around me to remind not to exceed certain depths etc. However, I lost my gatorade bottle close to shore as I hadn't fastened the string sack properly hahah and then had to go back for it once I realised. Other than that, I will make some adjustments to my tow float and sack like a shoulder strap for easy carrying from the car and snorkeling with it in the water. I have a float line inside the sack for longer snorkeling distances. This season seems the time for fishing so I will explore spearfishing and find a way for me to do it successfully, which means fish for my freezer. March, 2026. NOTES: excuse my voice and coughing on the audio as I had COVID but hadn't realised until the day after. If your covid test kits have expired by two years - you can still use them but if they have expired three years ago; then no haha
