Among the most famous composers of the era, he was influential in developing the musical form of the suite of dances in his keyboard works. His harpsichord pieces are highly idiomatic and programmatic. Full title: "Lament over the painful loss of the Royal Majesty of Ferdinand IV King of the Romans." Ferdinand IV was born in 1633, and was crowned in Germany on 18 June 1653. However, he unexpectedly died of smallpox in Vienna on 9 July 1654. Froberger uses some obvious musical symbolism at the end of the piece; an ascending C major scale: Ferdinand IV ascending into heaven.
