Lost In Saorge

Saorge is a picturesque commune perched on a mountainside in the Alpes-Maritimes department of France. It is one of 'Les Plus Beaux Villages de France', a list of the 176 most beautiful villages in France. I find the best way to explore labyrinthine villages such as this is to wander about simply following instinct, losing oneself. I did this for about an hour early one morning in July, filming and recording continuously while most people were still indoors and the tourists had not yet piled in. The local cats, with one exception, regarded me with some suspicion. I edited the results into about 100 fragments which were then rearranged using a random shuffle algorithm. I re-ordered some clips that I felt should be in a particular order but the remainder were left as they were. Saorge is free of traffic, in fact the alleyways would be too narrow and steep to support vehicles anyway. This cleans up the natural soundscape. It is recommended to listen thorough good quality headphones or speakers. Recorded on 9th July, 2025.
