Travellers rejoice as Ethiopian Airlines resumes flights to Tigray capital: “I fell to the ground

Travellers flying out of Addis Ababa’s Bole International Airport expressed joy Wednesday as Ethiopian Airlines resumed flights to Tigray’s capital of Makelle. It is the first time flights have flown in and out of the northern war-torn region since in about 18 months. Travellers said they looked forward to seeing family members after flights were cut off to the region when fighting broke out. “This is a joyful moment because we are going to meet our relatives after a very long time,” said on traveller, Tesfaye Tekhlay. The national carrier announced Tuesday it would resume flying the route after a meeting between the Ethopian government, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) and the Tigray government.
