Camacho Connecticut Box Pressed Review: A Cool & Casual Afternoon Smoke: These box pressed cigars are very similar to the original Camacho Connecticut Parejos. The Camacho Connecticut Parejo was included in Camacho's Bold Everyday Smokes, along with the Ecuador, Corojo, and others. The Box Pressed variant was released in January 2017. It's more or less the same blend as the Parejo. The filler contains Generoso & Alemán Ligero, as in the Parejo, however the Box Pressed also has Pennsylvanian American Broadleaf. [01:51] Look & Feel: The exterior is on the matte side, with a satin sheen, with a cafe latte color. Aromas include straw, savory/sarriette, giving it a very characteristically Connecticut scent. [02:46] Pre-Light Draw: The dry draw has a very faint resistance, because of the Camacho powerband technique. It's somewhere between loose and tight. Straw, Brazil nut, coffee cake, and grapefruit compose the dry draw flavor. [03:52] Taste & Burn [04:49] First Third The first third opens up very mild and aromatic, with straw, citrus, and herbs, including thyme, sage, and summer savory. The citrus is less prominent than in the dry draw. Burn is slightly uneven, but it's most likely because of the lighting, in this case. Because it's such a bright and sunny day, Charles-Philippe lit the cigar slightly unevenly. Due to the fact that it uses Camacho's powerband booking, it's still offering resistance, but that will even out later. [06:07] Second Third Getting into the second third, we find that the band is very easy to remove, which is usual for Camacho. This contrasts with a cigar like the AVO 30th Anniversary, which Paul reviewed, where the wrapper is firmly glued: https://bespokeunit.com/articles/ciga... The straw and aromatic savory, thyme and sage notes persist. On top of these, cappuccino is noticeable on the retrohale, frothy, creamy and bitter with a gourmand quality. Lastly, there is an enticing, light milk chocolate note in the background. [07:56] Final Third By this time, the straw note has faded. Instead there is a toasted brioche, yeasty, grilled and smoky. Brioche is a sweet, rich bread that Marie Antoinette wanted her people to eat, rather than, as often quoted, cake. The cigar finishes off with a dense, buttercream that is remarkably sweet. [09:10] Overall Experience Overall, it's slightly more complex in flavor development compared to the normal Camacho Connecticut, but not overly so. The Camacho Connecticut Box Pressed is the perfect pair to a mid-afternoon coffee or a casual barbecue with the boys. It's not something that would need to be saved for a special occasion, though it wouldn't be out of place. This takes longer to smoke than the Parejo, because the shape means it burns slightly cooler. The ash reaches about an inch in length, and taps off easily. The draw is between firm and loose. The wrapper is very typically Camacho, with the same shape and size, and ease of removal. The box pressed comes in several sizes: Robusto, 5x50, Toro, 6x50, and Gordo, 6x60.
