Capitola is located on the northern shores of Monterey Bay, on the Central Coast of California. Coastal Living Magazine named Capitola, California, one of the happiest seaside towns in America. Between the hippie spirit, the breathtaking natural beauty and the quirky residents, it’s everything you would dream of finding in a quaint California town. Besides being known for its overall beauty and livability, it’s full of unique California history. Alfred Hitchcock got his inspiration for 'The Birds' from a horrific incident that took place in Capitola. On an early summer morning in 1961, residents were awakened at 3:00 a.m. by a “rain of birds slamming against their homes [and] … dead and stunned seabirds littering the streets and roads in the foggy, early dawn.” This oldest beach resort on the West Coast, started out as a tent camp on the beach in the 1870s. That humble setup was replaced by a majestic Victorian-style hotel (which lasted until 1929), followed by beach side Italianate homes that now comprise the Capitola Venetian Hotel. The heart of the town is still along Capitola Beach, neighboring Esplanade Park, and the 855-foot pier, which is lined with wooden benches for taking in the spectacular views. There are many shops and restaurants on the hillside above the shoreline and along Soquel Creek to explore as well as dine on some delicious food. In this video, I am going to show you how I spent a day at this beautiful town near Santa Cruz. Enjoy the video!
