INTRO: [HOLDING BAG OF LR] There’s so much good stuff in here! [[MONTAGE]] A few weeks ago I switched up my Hydration Therapy from Normal Saline to Lactated Ringers. Admittedly my initial reason for switching was a lot less based in science and more based on the national shortage of Normal Saline limiting my hydration. I need to infuse 5x a week, with the NS shortage I was only getting 3x a week, and I wasn’t doing good. I had heard by word of mouth that that LR worked better and didn’t have a shortage, so I could infuse the needed amount. I asked my doctor if we could switch based on these reasons and he agreed. I ended up having to change home care agencies as well, but it was worth the hassle. Since Switching I have found out a lot more about Lactated Ringers and how it compares to normal saline such as NS is basically just salt in water. LR is Sodium chloride, potassium chloride, sodium lactate and calcium in water LR is considered a balanced fluid, NS is not, meaning it mixes better with your blood LR contains more electrolytes so it’s more efficient for rehydration Studies have shown that LR is easier on the body long-term than NS I switched because I wanted to feel better. Even with regular hydration at 3x a week with NS I was effectively bedridden from my fatigue. Since being on LR 5X a week I am feeling much better and that’s ultimately what matters to me. Some ways I’ve seen improvement -less fatigue -better retention of “good” feeling on non-infusion days -my HR generally stays between 80 and 120 now -no drops in my potassium Follow me on Instagram @lelarson93
