Performed by Christian Dillig (piano, Steinway M) Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943) is one of the great musical talents who composed from a young age. His first compositional attempts date back to 1885. The present work, Melody, is the third of four pieces Rachmaninoff composed in 1887 (according to another source, possibly as late as 1888) at the age of 14, and he originally marked these compositions proudly as his Opus 1. However, it appears that he later withdrew this label and attributed it instead to his First Piano Concerto, composed three years later—a far more spectacular public debut. At that time, his major compositional idol was Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893), who frequented the studio of Rachmaninoff's teacher, Nikolai Zverev (1832-1893), where Rachmaninoff also lived. Tchaikovsky likely even played some of his pieces for Rachmaninoff. Mélodie demonstrates both Rachmaninoff's early inclination toward rich harmonic color as well as his later, more mature mastery of melody formation. The first piece of this cycle, Romance, I have already recorded and published: • S. Rachmaninoff (14 years old): Romance in... At the age of 19, Rachmaninoff composed another piece titled Melody also in E major, which shows a greater sophistication in his compositional style. I have recorded it here: • Sergei Rachmaninoff (19 years old): Mélodi... Here is a playlist of all the pieces by Rachmaninoff, originally for piano or arranged for piano, that I have recorded:
