On the outskirts of Zagreb 🇭🇷 stands an unfinished hospital—an enormous concrete complex that was once one of Yugoslavia’s most ambitious public projects. Planned in the early 1980s, the National University Hospital was designed to be a cutting-edge medical center with over 1,000 beds, modern research facilities, and space for thousands of staff. It was funded directly by the citizens of Zagreb through a wage tax approved in two public referendums. Construction stopped in the early 1990s due to economic collapse and war, leaving the hospital about 45% complete. Since then, it has remained abandoned—slowly overtaken by time, weather, and graffiti. In recent years, there have been renewed plans to transform the site into a children's hospital, with a proposed completion date of 2029. This video documents the site as it exists now, and the story behind it. Some visual elements in this video have been lightly enhanced using AI tools to help illustrate the story more clearly. All edits are faithful to the original atmosphere and intent of the location.
