Its official name is Tsuyu-no-Tenjinja (露天神社). It is popular among the locals as a shrine located in the heart of the city that offers blessings for matchmaking. However, when it was first established, the shrine actually had nothing to do with matchmaking. Later, however, it became a sacred place for matchmaking thanks to two men and a woman who loved each other. The exact date of the founding of Ohatsu Tenjin is not known. It is said to be around the 6th century. The existence of Ohatsu Tenjin was made famous by a puppet play "Sonezakishinju" (The Sonezaki Shinju) presented by Monzaemon Chikamatsu in the Edo period. At the time, Tokubei, who worked for a soy sauce shop in Osaka, and Ohatsu, a prostitute, were in love with each other. However, the owner of the soy sauce shop, in an attempt to get Tokubei to marry another woman, gave the betrothal money to Tokubei's stepmother without permission. Tokubei returned the betrothal money to his master and went to his stepmother to retrieve the betrothal money in order to break off the engagement. He successfully retrieves the betrothal money, but on his way home, his best friend Kuhei, whom he met by chance, asks him to lend him the money, and Tokubei lends him the betrothal money for three days only. Tokubei asks him to return the money, but Kuheiji refuses. Instead, Kuheiji spreads a lie that Tokubei stole the store's money, and the townspeople believe the lie. In the midst of all this, Tokubei and Ohatsu miraculously meet again. Realizing that she cannot marry Tokubei because of her status as a prostitute, Ohatsu asks Tokubei to commit suicide with her in order to become husband and wife in heaven. Moved by O-Hatsu's willingness to die for him, despite the fact that he had lost his credibility as a merchant and his body and soul were in shambles, Tokubei decides to commit suicide with O-Hatsu. They committed suicide in the "Tenjin no Mori," which existed at that time in the Ohatsu Tenjin Shrine. This story is not a fiction, but a true story that actually happened in 1703 at Ohatsu Tenjin. Within a month or so after the incident, Chikamatsu Monzaemon published a puppet play based on the incident, and the shrine attracted a lot of attention. And from the name of the heroine Ohatsu, the open-air shrine was commonly known as "Ohatsu Tenjin" from that time to the present. Bronze statues of Ohatsu and Tokubei have been installed on the shrine grounds. The deity of Ohatsu Tenjin is also known as the god of marriage. However, at the time of its founding, the shrine was dedicated to a local deity to protect the community. Later, it gradually became a shrine of matchmaking because it was the place where two loving men and women, Hatsu and Tokubei, tragically but tragically pledged their love to each other. As a place where the strong love between Oatsu and Tokubei remains, people gradually came to recognize it as a power spot for matchmaking. ------------ In this article, we introduced the history and highlights of Ohatsu Tenjin, known as a shrine for matchmaking in Osaka City. Ohatsu Tenjin attracts many worshippers daily as a sacred place for matchmaking. More than 300 years have passed since the death of Ohatsu and Tokubei, but traces of their love still remain in Ohatsu Tenjin. If you visit the shrine after learning the tragic story of Ohatsu and Tokubei, you will understand the power of Ohatsu Tenjin even more. Why don't you pray for a good marriage at the place where they pledged their eternal love to each other in spite of the tragedy? 01:12 (Torii)archway 04:10 Main Shrine 06:24 Ohatsu and Tokubei 07:08 Shrine 08:36 Gate 10:50 Skyscrapers Umeda Osaka 11:31 (Torii)archway2 12:30 cherry trees at evening 12:51 Shrine #travelvlog #japan #osaka #shrine #walking #travel
