You don’t have to pay additional licensing fees to use RMAN. In addition, you must ensure you are following certain basic steps to make sure you can successfully carry out the database recovery when you’re pressed for time. Explaining Using FRA and Auto Backup Enabled When you enable auto backups and use the fast recovery area, no recovery catalog is required (to restore the control file), and you don’t have to explicitly provide RMAN with the name and location of backup files or your target database identifier (DBID). This is one of the simplest methods that RMAN provides for restoring a control file. However, this solution works only when you enable auto backups of your control file and use an FRA. RMAN uses the value of your operating system ORACLE_SID variable to look in the default location for control file backups in the FRA. RMAN deduces the default location of the backup file by combining the values of the db_ recovery_file_dest initialization parameter and your operating system ORACLE_SID variable setting.
