The first story from our new series, SLUMSCAPES, focuses on the residents of Kibera, Nairobi who are battling the construction of a new highway that is slated to slice through their community - bulldozing 10 schools, thousands of homes, churches, clinics and graveyards. Kibera is one of Africa's oldest, largest slums, located just five kilometres from Nairobi city centre, and home to more than 170,000 people. The battle highlights the precarious situation faced by slum dwellers globally. Many have no legal rights to the land they have occupied for decades, thwarting their efforts to invest in essential services, like education, to improve their lives.
