Complexity Bias in the Prevention of Iatrogenic Injury

Dr. William Padula, an Assistant Professor of Health Economics at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, CA, offers recommendations in his Perspective article appearing in the February 2022, issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings for further reducing in hospital injury. He notes that even though overall these injury rates have fallen, incident rates of pressure injuries have increased costing 70 to 80 billion in medical expenses. He notes this is likely related to the way iatrogenic injuries are tracked and he offers a new formula for addressing these issues. He specifically notes the overlap in injuries related to nutrition, mobility, and moisture, and recommends changing care teams to address these three issues to overall improve incidences of iatrogenic injuries.
