Hi everyone! My name is Dan, and I am a veterinarian. Today I am talking about medial patella luxation. The patella luxating can also be called a loose kneecap or a kneecap that is dislocated. No matter what we call it, it is when the kneecap or the patella moves from its normal location over the femur and inward or medially located on the leg. Most pet parents want to know if their dog needs surgery or just medicine. It can be very scary when you hear your pet has a bad knee, and you will want to know what is the next step. Medial patella luxation is very common in small and toy bread dogs. It can happen in large dogs too, but it is not very common in the big dogs. When you veterinarian finds MPL or medial patella luxation you may not even know your dog has loose kneecaps, because they do not show any signs of pain or lameness. This is one of the most common findings. The dog is asymptomatic meaning, they are not showing any symptoms. In these cases your vet may recommended joint supplements and an NSAID if your dog is painful off and on. Because the dog is not showing symptoms or if the pain or lameness is just off and on, these dogs are handled with medical management which includes joint supplements and anti-inflammatory medications. Surgery is needed for those dogs that are painful on a regular basis and are not using their MPL leg well.
