Discussing Production During COVID on their New Netflix Feature Film MALCOLM & MARIE. Moderated by Alessandro Ago, Director of Programming, USC School of Cinematic Arts, on Thursday, March 4th, 2021. ABOUT THE GUESTS MARCELL RÉV (Cinematographer) Cinematographer Marcell Rév most recently shot Malcolm & Marie with writer/director Sam Levinson. The film, starring Zendaya and John David Washington, was the first feature to shoot and wrap during the pandemic with alimited crew, and was acquired by Netflix. Rév first collaborated with Levinson on the thriller Assassination Nation, which had the highest sale at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival to Neon & AGBO. Rév continued to work with Levinson on the criticallyacclaimed first season of HBO’s Euphoria, for which he won Best Pilot at the Camerimage Film Festival. He is currently working on season two of Euphoria. Rév’s other credits include the yet to be released The Story of My Wife directed by acclaimed Hungarian director Ildikó Enyedi starring Léa Seydoux; Barry Levinson’s Paterno starring Al Pacino for HBO; and White God, directed by Kornél Mundruczó and released by Magnolia Pictures. White God won the Un Certain Regard award at Cannes and was praised by Variety for its dynamic camerawork. Rév received praise for Land of Storms, a romantic drama directed by Ádám Császi, which debuted at the Berlin International Film Festival and was recognized for its “superb lensing” and “bold compositions” by Variety. Rév also shot Jupiter’s Moon, an Official Selection at Cannes directed by Mundruczó, and Most of the Souls That Live Here, a comedy directed by Ivan and Igor Buharov. Rév was awarded the Hungarian Film Critics award for Best Cinematographer ofthe Year in 2015. He has shot numerous shorts, commercials, and music videos. Révstudied cinematography at the Hungarian Academy for Film and Drama. JULIO C. PEREZ IV (Editor) Julio C. Perez IV lives and works in Los Angeles, editing narrative and documentary features and television. He most recently edited the pandemic-shot film, Malcolm & Marie, with writer/director Sam Levinson. The film was bought by Netflix and stars Zendaya and John David Washington. He first worked with Sam on a recut of his film Assassination Nation (2018 Sundance Film Festival), which garnered the biggest saleof the festival to Neon & AGBO. Perez then collaborated with Levinson as the supervising editor on the acclaimed first season of HBO’s Euphoria for which he was nominated for an ACE Eddie Award for the pilot episode. He will continue as supervising editor as well as Co-Producer on season two of Euphoria. Perez also edited Under the Silver Lake with writer/director David Robert Mitchell, which premiered in competition at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. The film stars Andrew Garfield and Riley Keough. This was Julio’s third film with writer/director David Robert Mitchell - the others being the critically acclaimed and award-winning It Follows for which Julio was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for Best Editing and The Myth of the American Sleepover (SXSW, Cannes International Critics Week). Some of his other credits include This is Martin Bonner (Best of Next Audience Award Winner, Sundance Film Festival; John Cassavetes Award Winner, Independent Spirit Awards), His House (NHK Award Winner, Sundance Film Festival), Mistaken for Strangers (additional editing; Official Selection, Tribeca Film Festival), Dior and I (Official Selection, Tribeca Film Festival), and BJ Perlmutt’s documentary, Havana Motor Club. When not clicking away in a dim cave for a dollar, Julio loves to watch old movies andwander around forests, deserts, and cities. ABOUT MALCOLM & MARIE Sam Levinson teams up with Zendaya and John David Washington for an achingly romantic drama in which a filmmaker (John David Washington) and his girlfriend (Zendaya) return home following a celebratory movie premiere as he awaits what’s sure to be imminent critical and financial success. The evening suddenly takes a turn as revelations about their relationships begin to surface, testing the strength of their love. Working with cinematographer Marcell Rév, Levinson creates a film of rare originality; an ode to the great Hollywood romances as well as a heartfelt expression of faith in the medium's future.
