This hip neighbourhood used to be ancient Rome's red-light district, where Julius Caesar was born, but nowadays it's one of Rome's coolest areas. You're still in the city centre, but Monti feels calmer and less touristy than the absolute heart of town. Piazza della Madonna dei Monti is the evening hotspot, perfect if you want a central location without being mobbed by tour groups. The best place to stay is west of Piazza Navona and Campo dei Fiori in the Parione district - you get the authentic Roman street life without the chaos of the Spanish Steps.
