Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) has been at the center of multiple scandals involving corruption, poor governance, irregular appointments, and sexual harassment allegations over several years. The most recent allegations emerged in December 2025, concerning the manipulation of a multi-million-rand student transport tender. The latest allegations against the Vice-Chancellor appear to be part of a widening net of corruption claims that have besieged the university's upper echelons in 2025. Earlier reports from June had already implicated the Council Chairperson, Maria Rambauli, and the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Eminos Manyawi, in a R600 million scandal involving a 2,000-bed student accommodation project. 2. On December 11, 2025, Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube confirmed a localised breach of the NSC examinations, which was first detected by markers on December 2 due to unusual similarities in English Home Language Paper 2 scripts. The internal investigation traced the leak—which affected English Home Language, Mathematics, and Physical Sciences—to two Department of Basic Education officials in the national office, who are implicated in accessing and distributing the papers via a USB to learners in seven Pretoria schools. Both officials have been suspended and a criminal case for the unlawful possession of state property has been opened with the South African Police Service (SAPS); no arrests have been confirmed at this time. A National Investigative Task Team (NITT) has been established to verify the full scope of the breach, identify all of the 26 implicated pupils, and recommend safeguards for the 2025 NSC, with a final report due to the Minister and Umalusi on December 31, 2025. Community Mve Bitter melon Special Notes Implicated Individuals Maria Rambauli (Council Chairperson): She was implicated in a separate R600 million scandal concerning a 2,000-bed student accommodation project. A whistleblower alleged she demanded kickbacks from the contractor and met with them outside the university to negotiate personal deals. Eminos Manyawi (Chief Financial Officer - CFO): Manyawi was also accused in the same R600 million accommodation scandal of being involved in the alleged siphoning of money and negotiating a 10% kickback from the contractors' payments. Professor Peter Mbati (Former Vice-Chancellor): The former VC faced multiple allegations, including an irregular appointment process and several claims of sexual harassment, though university and parliamentary investigations ultimately dismissed these claims as without merit. Ronnie Mampana (Former Director for Procurement): He was suspended in 2020 on allegations of corruption and breaching university policies related to student accommodation and transport contracts. Tshepo Mofokeng (Internal Audit Director): In the most recent transport tender scandal, the VC allegedly appointed Mofokeng as the chairperson of the bid evaluation committee, a move which has been flagged as a potential conflict of interest and a violation of procurement protocols, as the internal audit role should provide independent oversight.
