It’s located at the confluence of the rivers Lech and Wertach, about 60 kilometers (37 miles) northwest of Munich. With a population of approximately 300,000, Augsburg is the third-largest city in Bavaria after Munich and Nuremberg. Historical Significance: Augsburg has a rich history, dating back over 2,000 years. During the Renaissance and early modern period, it was a major center of trade and finance, particularly due to influential merchant families like the Fugger and Welser. The city was a Free Imperial City of the Holy Roman Empire for nearly 500 years. Fugger Legacy: The Fugger family, one of the wealthiest merchant families in Europe, left a significant mark on Augsburg. They financed emperors and kings and contributed to the city’s development. The Fuggerei, the world's oldest social housing complex, was established by Jakob Fugger in 1521 and continues to house residents for a symbolic rent.
