In the film ‘Indigenous people protect their mangrove village’, our partner Aceh Wetland Forum (AWF) shows how the village of Simpang Lhee is becoming a ‘mangrove village’. Here, the old indigenous rules, the Adat, apply to the preservation of nature. For centuries, the indigenous people of Simpang Lhee have lived off the mangrove forests without destroying them. But in recent years, a great deal of deforestation has taken place. The village is fighting back with a new ‘mangrove village’ concept that combines their traditional ecological rules with environmentally friendly management and formal recognition. The goals are the preservation and renaturalisation of the mangrove forest ecosystem and economic independence The ‘Mangrove Village’ is supported by the Aceh Wetland Forum (AWF) and Rainforest Rescue. Simpang Lhee is to become a role model for other villages in the wetlands of Aceh in the north of Sumatra, Indonesia. This is all the more important as more than half of the province's mangrove forests have been destroyed - for fish ponds, charcoal production, oil palm plantations and agriculture.
