“CAMELEON - Poachers of Mozambique” / Mozambique's Limpopo Park is one of Africa's largest animal reserves. A vast, wild territory, home to the “big 5”: elephants, buffalo, lions, leopards and rhinoceroses. But for several years now, ivory trafficking and poaching have been on the increase. In 10 years, more than half of all animals have been killed by poachers. A kilo of ivory is worth 6,000 euros, and a complete rhinoceros horn can fetch up to 65,000 euros. Enough to arouse vocations. A special anti-poaching unit was set up a year and a half ago to try and curb the traffic. Rangers patrol the park and hunt down poachers relentlessly. It's an uphill battle, against unscrupulous men willing to kill for a few kilos of ivory. Sebastian immerses himself in this hostile world. He will share the daily life of the rangers and that of Arturo, their leader. A former Special Forces commander in the Portuguese army, he leads his team of rangers through savannah and bush with an iron fist. Arturo will explain to Sebastian the very special techniques he has developed to track down poachers: daily checkpoints and ambushes, night stalking in the bush, amidst wild animals, snakes and the thousand and one dangers of the reserve. Sebastian then embarks with Manuel, Arturo's deputy, on a risky patrol of the Elephant River. The local fishermen have become the poachers' informers. They transport tusks, horns, lion teeth and hippopotamus meat in their boats. To understand the motives of the elephant killers, Sebastian also meets a repentant poacher who has killed 13 elephants and 7 rhinos. As the days go by, Sebastian and the rangers follow the trail of the ivory traffickers, through the bush and up the river, until the final arrest of a group of poachers. #documentary #society #reportage First broadcast : 19/09/2017 A report by Gaël Mocaër 🟢 Subscribe to 100% Docs / @100docs 🟢 Produced by CAPA : https://www.capatv.com/ 🟢 Welcome to 100% Docs, THE channel for documentaries of all kinds that opens a window on the world around us.
