Herbert Howells is predominantly remembered as a composer of music for choirs and organ, and his music is performed regularly in cathedrals and parish churches. He wrote a number of Psalm Preludes, with this being the first prelude in Set 1, dated 1915, and dedicated to Sir Walter Parratt. It is a musical commentary upon Psalm 34 verse 6: "This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles." This recording was made on a Johannus Live III AGO organ, using the sample of the fine Hill organ in the church of the Holy Name, opposite the University of Manchester on Oxford Road, Manchester (the organ case is pictured at the beginning and end of the video). The sample sets can be heard from four positions: console, front of the church, centre of the church, rear of the church. This recording uses the rear of the church position, affording the most generous recording of the wonderful acoustic in this fine building.
