In 1868, a black basalt monument was found in the ruins of ancient Dibon. It was later smashed into pieces during a dispute, but the text survived through recovered fragments and early impressions. That inscription was written by Mesha, king of Moab, and it preserves a hostile eyewitness account from the era of Israel’s kings. It names Israel, mentions Omri, and includes the divine name YHWH. It also contains a debated damaged line that many scholars argue refers to the “House of David.” In this video we read the key lines, explain the history behind the discovery, and compare the record with the biblical account in 2 Kings 3. Read the text. Compare the sources. Then open the Word and see it for yourself.
