Express lane expansion project on I-495 Beltway is coming to an end after 3 years

"The end is definitely in sight” according to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) after crews made the final major traffic shift in a construction project that will extend the Beltway Express Lanes roughly three miles from the Dulles Toll Road to the George Washington Parkway. For more than three years, construction crews have been working both on the Beltway and in nearby areas on the project. When the new lanes open, the express lanes in Virginia will extend from Springfield near the Mixing Bowl all the way to the George Washington Parkway. This past week crews shifted traffic on the southbound lanes of the Beltway to the outer section of the road between Georgetown Pike and an area between bridges for Old Dominion Drive and Lewinsville Road. It was the last of several major traffic shifts within the past few months.
