The historic debate between Baladeva Vidyabhushana and the Ramanandi Brahmins was held in the early 18th century near Jaipur to resolve a dispute regarding the legitimacy of the Gaudiya Vaishnava sampradaya. Ramanandi scholars, holding influence in the court of King Sawai Jai Singh II, challenged the Gaudiya tradition on the grounds that it was not one of the 4 authorized (Chatuh) sampradayas and lacked its own commentary on the Vedanta-sutra, specifically objecting to the worship of Srimati Radharani alongside Krishna. Representing the Gaudiya community, Baladeva Vidyabhushana was sent to defend the doctrine, where he argued that the lineage was authentic and, upon being challenged, composed the Govinda-bhasya within a few days via the direct blessing of Govindaji. After reading his powerful commentary, the Ramanandis were defeated, confirming the legitimacy of Gaudiya Vaishnavism and establishing its right to maintain its worship.
