Scrabo tower is a very well known landmark that is 160 metres above sea level and is 38 metres high; it gives an amazing view of all around County Down and more! ( • Scrabo Tower - Newtownards, County Down, N... ) For some safety reasons, sometimes getting into and gaining access into the tower might not be allowed - it might open on selected days per year, but the views of the surrounding area are amazing! The tower can be seen from around the area and normally when flying into Belfast - it's a sight that can be seen. When Scrabo Tower was first built back in 1857, it was regarded as a turreted tower and was built as a memorial to Charles Stewart, 3rd Marquess of Londonderry who was one of the Dukes of Wellington's generals during the Napoleonic wars, but the tower is now just part of a country park. Even though it used to be closed and treated like a country park, Scrabo Tower still remains a noted landmark that is located to the west of Newtownards in county Down, Northern Ireland ( • Scrabo Tower Newtownards, Northern Ireland ). The interesting thing about this tower and maybe one of the reasons that attach people to the place and make them in need to go and check what this tower is, is the fact that it is visible from most of north Down - so tourists always feel that they want to reach that tower which they could see from almost everywhere. When Scrabo Tower was still allowing people to climb it and check the displays that it could offer, the visitors used to climb 122 steps in order to reach the viewing level, but as we have mentioned before, the tower has been closed for the public in 2014 for some safety reasons, by 2015 these problems were partially dealt with and the tower used to open its gates during specific occasions until 2017 when it reopened once again. The park in which Scrabo Tower is located - which is known as Scrabo Country Park - is open to the public and has several woodland walks and parkland through Killynether Wood. Getting to check the tower in this country park is of course one of the main reasons why people think about it in the first place, but there is actually a beautiful view that people could check from this park which extends across Strangford Lough with its different islands and to the Mountains of Mourne and the Scottish Coast. Sometimes, Scrabo Tower is referred to as "the Guardian of the North Down coast" and this goes back to the views it could actually has over the city. The tower is also a marked replica of some of the Scottish watch towers which were built along the border that played a part of the forays long ago. One of the interesting things to know about the tower and its construction is the fact that it was constructed from Scrabo Hill stone; the walls are of the dark dolerite rock, which forms the summit of the hill, while the roof, the stairs, the quoins, and the window dressings are of Scrabo sandstone. During the different trips that we have been making around Ireland and Northern Ireland, we came across lots of old buildings, museums, and towers which we wanted to share them all with our viewers and from those towers which we have been to; we visited the Round Tower that is located in Antrim town and which we believe is considered the best rounded tower to be found out there ( • Round Tower in Antrim Town - County Antrim... ), and we also visited the Haunted Tower, which is not much of a tower but has been always referred to as a tower and which takes its name from the fact that it carries the haunted room where some ghosts are believed to live, this is located in the Ballygally Castle Hotel ( • Ballygally Castle Hotel with its Haunted R... ). If you decided to come and visit Scrabo Tower at some point, then there are different other places in Newtownards which you could pass by, such as Grey Abbey which is just 7 miles outside Newtownards but deserves a visit for the Anglo-Norman Cistercian architecture that it hosts ( • Grey Abbey in Newtownards, County Down - N... ). Another beautiful place for visitors and tourists to pass by is the Kiltonga Wildlife Reserve which is a beautiful destination for those who want to have a nice walk but with a different twist for the lake that people will be walking around and the birds that are living there ( • Kiltonga Wildlife Reserve - Newtownards, N... ). There is also Mount Stewart House and Garden in Newtownards which we believe will be an interesting destination for lots of people out there ( • Mount Stewart House and Gardens - 360 Degr... ). These are the different places and destinations which we would recommend for all those visiting Newtownards for Scrabo Tower and want to check some of the other places which carry any kind of history or which are believed to be perfect hits for the nature part.
