WARNING THIS VIDEO CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR THE UPCOMING DLC! Within Elden Ring imps are small humanoid enemies that resemble living stone statues of winged gargoyles, some bearing the heads of demons, others beasts. They are often found in tombs & catacombs acting as guardians to the deceased, or possibly guardians to the roots of the Erdtree/Minor Erdtrees located inside of the catacombs; roots connected to Erdtree burials. They inflict blood loss by either using the Forked Hatchet, Forked Greatsword, or their Throwing Daggers. Imps within real world folklore are connected to blood as well, witch hunters claimed that witches would feed imps with their own blood in return for the imp's servitude. The Forked Hatchet refers to an imp's tongue being forked. The phrase "forked tongue" in English literature, can be used in reference to a reptilian tongue, or as a metaphor for untruthfulness. To "speak with a forked tongue" means to deliberately say one thing and mean another, or act in a deceitful manner. Imps in Elden Ring mirror their real world counterparts lore as both are small creatures that travel in pairs/in mobs that display wild behavior & can be bound to an item, like how the imp seal statues are accessible via the Stonesword Key. Interestingly witches were accused of using imps to carry out evil deeds upon innocent people, such as bewitchment (the act or power to attract as if by the power of witchcraft). While in the Lands Between the Tarnished can utilize a Bewitching Branch on an imp to solve the puzzle located at the Albinauric Rise within the Consecrated Snowfield. The Bewitching Branch displays kind Miquella's ability to compel the affections of others. Plus within the Haligtree (sapling Miquella watered with his own blood) two imp like depictions are seen on either side of a cloaked figure holding a large needle. Imp as a noun can mean small demon, or a mischievous child. While within the Lands Between Malenia's remembrance states that Miquella was cursed with eternal childhood.
