3 Obscure Wild Edibles You Can Find While Foraging - Chufa, Asiatic Day Flower, Clear Weed

Hey guys in this video we will cover 3 obscure wild edible that you can find while foraging. In this video we will cover plants like the Chufa grass, or Tigernut. The Asiatic Day Flower, and Clear Weed. Each one of these plants is edible, unlike the other obscure plant videos I have done in the past. The first plant we talk about is the Asiatic Day Flower which is an alien plant hence its common name, Asiatic as it comes from Asia. Being a Day Flower species means that each flower only appears once, however there are multiple flowers on each plant. The flowers are three petaled with two prominent Indigo colored petals that are somewhat ear shaped. The third petal is clear/translucent and usually hangs underneath the stamens. The stamens are prominent with yellow colored tips that appear to be flowers themselves. Asiatic Day Flower has oval to ovate shaped leaves with smooth margins and an alternating leaf structure. At each node you will notice a small sheath that connects the clasping leaves to the main stem of the plant. The next plant we will talk about is the popular Chufa or Tigernut grass. This plant is very popular in the middle east and is gaining in popularity in the United States for its health benefits, like Calcium and Vitamin D. Being a grass species it is easily determined by its triangular shaped stem and its extremely noticeable flower and seed spike at the top. The leaves are grass like with a prominent canal or channel running through the center. The leaves are yellow green and grow in a basal form and an opposite pattern up the stem. Producing edible tubers that are harvested before the first frost, this plant is extremely nutritious and easy to grow. Many will grow this plant for deer and turkey as they love the edible tubers. The last plant that we talk about today is called Clear Weed, which gets its common name from the clear or translucent appearance of the main stem. Along this main stem you will notice a small channel or canal that runs up the stem from node to node, however it alternates between the nodes. Unlike its leaves which grow opposite along the stem. The leaves are ovate to lance shaped with sharp prominent teeth running along their margins. In the nodes of the stem is where the plant produces its flowers which are anther like and do not appear as normal petaled flowers. Clear Weed is related to stinging nettles though it doesn't have those urticating or stinging hairs that nettles have making it easy to distinguish. The leaves are glossy in appearance, unlike nettles which are somewhat dull and fuzzy where as the Clear Weed is not.
