📔 DESCRIPTION 📔 A time-lapse journey from Hat Creek, British Columbia to the Peace Arch border crossing at Blaine, Washington along the majestic and scenically diverse British Columbia Highway 99. Highway 99 goes by several names depending on which section you are driving on: In the north Highway 99 is known as Duffey Lake Road; in the Pemberton Valley Highway 99 is known as Lillooet Lake Road east of Mount Currie and Pemberton Portage Road west of Mount Currie; from Pemberton, through Whistler and Squamish and on to West Vancouver Highway 99 is known as the famous Sea-to-Sky Highway. Our journey starts at the northern end of Highway 99 at Hat Creek and travels 377km south to the United States border. Highway 99 travels through a diverse range of landscapes including the coastal mountain range which is home to the resort village of Whistler (host to many venues of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games), then along the rugged shoreline of Howe Sound south of Squamish, then over the Lions Gate Bridge into the heart of Metro Vancouver in the lower mainland. South of the Lions Gate Bridge Highway 99 travels through Stanley Park and through the centre of Downtown Vancouver and then onto freeways through the cities of Richmond and Delta. Our journey through the Metro Vancouver area happens to be at the height of the afternoon rush hour and heavy urban traffic congestion is a result. You’ll notice the severe traffic backup approaching the George Massey Tunnel under the Fraser River; the traffic bottleneck at the George Massey Tunnel is a common headache for motorists in the Vancouver area and the British Columbia government is set to fix the bottleneck by replacing the existing underwater crossing with a new eight-lane tunnel by 2030 for a cost of over $4B. At the southernmost end of Highway 99, we see the Peace Arch monument that sits directly on the international border between Canada and the United States. The Peace Arch was built in 1921 and commemorates the signing of the Treaty of Ghent in 1814, and symbolizes a long history of peace between Canada and the United States.
