Friday 25th March at Hammond/Whiting Amtrak Station It was non stop action from the moment we arrived at 8:45 in the morning. First to arrive was a CSX manifest heading east, as that went out of view a CSX westbound manifest came round the corner. It eventually came to complete stop witht he end of the train by the platform. Next an NS stack arrived and movedover to track 4 to slowly enter the yard just north of the depot. Then Amtrak came rushing through heading to Chicago Quickly followed by a CP manifest headed by a KCS GE loco. As the end of this train passed by the next NS stack train came round the corner. As this moves slowly forward Amtrak arrives at speed through the station. The stack train pulled forward but then stopped again, even though it had a flashing yellow signal just ahead of it. As we were watching that a light UP loco arrived and waited by the stack train, as we saw late he was waiting to crossover to track 3 that the stack train was on. The SD38-2 then arrives this is a former EJ&E loco (now CN) but it's still in the EJ&E orange livery. It was taking a short train of coils towards the steel works. With the stack train and light loco still blocking mains 2 and 3 a BNSF coal train thunders through the depot. Finally the stack train pulled away, once it had gone the light UP loco headed south crossing over to track 3. Then a train arrived from the steel works with coil cars on the lakeside tracks. I had to hurry over to the carpark to shoot this. Then it was back to the platform to catch an eastbound stack train. Once this had passed the UP loco returned with a short stack train running long hood forward, taking the train into the yard to the north. An that was it for the morning.
