Self-Ligating vs. Conventional Lingual Brackets Dr. Kanarelis Takis Self-ligation is an act of utilizing a permanent installed moveable component within a bracket to entrap the arch wire to a bracket. Self-ligating brackets by definition, these are brackets that have an in-built mechanism which can be opened or close to secure the arch wire. From the other hand, the connection that is referred as „ligationʼʼ , is the form of connection to a bracket that wires need to transmit a moving force, so the wire is in turn fixed to the tooth. What are the advantages and disadvantages of those systems? What are the ideal requirements for each one? What about their ligate secure behavior and their full bracket engagement? Their friction level, their ease and speed to be used? Have they the same maintenance of optimal oral hygiene as the conventional brackets? What about the comfort of the patient and the cost of each category? A systematic review on self-ligating vs. conventional brackets from 1981-2014 (May) at 634 Articles adding of course personal opinions of many lingualists orthodontists and my proper experience since 1991 has been performed. This topic is a try for some strong answers to all these questions and even more, to the difference between the two systems (conventional vs self-ligation). Over the years and under the given technological development, we believe that we have so much more to learn about the best use of a ligation, in the field of orthodontic systems and we all agree for the same conclusion.
