Moths in the family Sessiidae are a group of day flying moths that are known for being incredible wasp mimics. They are rarely seen and poorly understood but one thing that is known about some of the species in this group is that they are heavy duty pests to various kinds of agricultural plants and crops. In this video we will be highlighting the Grape Root Borer moth (Vitacea polistiformis). They can cause a considerable amount of damage to grape vines because their larvae borrow into the roots of the vines and weaken or even kill the plant. There are some artificial sex pheromones that are made that attract the males of this species by imitating the chemical pheromone that the females emit to attract males in courtship. It was to our surprise to see a very curious male come to the lure and land on it giving us the opportunity to observe and discuss. #keysmoths #moths #butterfly #pesticide #entomology #sessiid
