Where does the concept of institutional purpose come from? Professor Gianmario Verona traced it back to the influential letter sent by Larry Fink, the CEO of BlackRock, to its partner CEOs in 2018. This idea emerged after three financial crises, the accelerating threat of climate change, and the widening economic disparities between social classes and between emerging and established regions of the world. Defining a purpose became a valuable exercise, offering a way to highlight a company's contribution to society and its impact on the surrounding environment. It also provided a clear reference for long-term strategic planning, i.e. the long-term survival of the company! On 26March, moderated by Daniele Manca and Virginia Nesi from Corriere della Sera, we saw on stage concrete examples of how to embrace "institutional purpose" thanks to with Filippo Grandi, High Commissioner at UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, in a context where data shows that including refugees in national services and labor markets is not only a humanitarian duty but also an economic and social opportunity; Andrea Guerra, CEO at Prada Group, explaining how Italian companies must face the challenge of balancing identity and modernity by investing in research, sustainability, and digitalization to strengthen their leadership in global markets.
