In this video, I talk about how contributing to open source shaped my thinking as an engineer in ways that traditional employment alone never did. Open source forces you to enter unfamiliar systems without authority, navigate large codebases without onboarding, and collaborate with people who are there by choice, not obligation. I discuss: • Architectural literacy and reading unfamiliar systems • Communicating technical ideas clearly in public • Influence without hierarchy • Designing for unknown users • Ambiguity and self-directed problem framing • Why voluntary collaboration creates a different kind of teamwork For me, open source has been more than practice. It has been a space for growth, stewardship, and intentional contribution, independent of job titles. If you’re contributing to open source or considering it, I’d love to hear how it shaped your thinking. For more information: dot.cards/dobybaxter127
