Back shot of man working on computer STORYLINE Iran''s state-run television on Monday quoted an official of the supreme national security council as saying eight people had been killed in Sunday''s clashes between protesters and security forces in the centre of the capital, Tehran. Witnesses and opposition websites had reported at least five people were killed in the violence, one of the bloodiest confrontations in months. Some accounts of the violence in Tehran were vivid and detailed, but they could not be independently confirmed because of government restrictions on media coverage. Residents of the capital on Monday began the clean-up process after a number of buildings, including a bank and a real estate agency, were damaged in Sunday''s protests. One man, who said his tailoring store had been destroyed, called for calm, saying "this way, we cannot live our lives". Another man suggested the authorities and the opposition should sit and talk. "They should be given the opportunity to say what they have to say and they should be listened to," he said. Sunday''s violence erupted when security forces fired on stone-throwing protesters in the centre of Tehran. The dead included a nephew of chief opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi, according to Mousavi''s Web site, Kaleme.ir. Police denied using firearms, but the clashes were sure to deepen antagonism between the government and a reform movement that has shown resilience in the face of repeated crackdowns since the June election. Another opposition leader on Monday condemned the killing of protesters, which coincided with Shiite Islam''s most important religious observance.
