IWE in 2 minutes with Sophia Falk 🔸 ABOUT SOPHIA 🔸 Sophia Falk is a PhD student at the Bonn Sustainable AI Lab which is part of the Institute for Science and Ethics at the University of Bonn. ➔ https://www.iwe.uni-bonn.de/sophia 🔸 ABOUT THIS VIDEO 🔸 Increased climate awareness and dedication to combat the crisis are shaping the rise of technology applications, such as AIs for Sustainability, to solve, or at least mitigate the global crisis. However, we believe that the terms ‘Sustainable AI’ in general and ‘Sustainability of AI’ in particular are overused to the extent that they have lost their meaning. To test the hypothesis that there has been an increase in the use of the term ‘sustainability’ in the AI discourse of late, we conducted a literature review. Analyzing the results, we came to the following statistics: Between 2000 and 2017, the number of publications indexed with keywords related to Sustainable AI remained well below 100 publications/year for a decade before slowly increasing but still hovering around 100 publications/year until 2016, finally reaching the 250 publications/year mark between 2017 and 2018. Then, in 2018, the topic ‘Sustainable AI’ gained traction and the number of publications increased exponentially. In 2022, we have almost 2000 publications/year. Therefore, the hypothesis that there is a recent trend of increasing number of publications in the Sustainable AI discourse has firm evidence. So, we aim to create a common understanding of what the ‘AI for Sustainability’ movement ought to mean. Therefore, we distinguish between two possible application groups: AI towards Sustainability, which are purely predictive systems that serve as monitoring systems or information providers but do not involve any action. And actual AIs for Sustainability, which are agentic AI applications that are directly involved in an activity that contribute to a sustainability goal.
