Other Picks: 2016 Editorial: https://www.wineaccess.com/catalog/20... 2018 Editorial: https://www.wineaccess.com/catalog/20... Yesterday from Wine Access is one of the BEST Cabernet's to come out of their incredible lineup of Wine Access Exclusive wines to date. These "NDA wines" are the culmination of great relationships with vineyards and producers around the valley who make premium fruit or wine available so long as the source is never officially revealed. This is of course done to protect the brand (or brands) associated with source since the wines offered are literally a fraction of the price. So why/how does this happen? Well, a number of different reasons ranging from too much fruit, to cash flow issues, to insufficient marketing/winemaking bandwidth. In 2018 for example, the crop was not only exceptional in quality, but also exceptionally large in volume. Now, you may be asking yourself "Wait, isn't that a GOOD thing." In some instances - YES, absolutely. But you have to remember how the game works. If you are a winery of small to medium size and you allocate for say 50 tons of fruit to come in on average each vintage, you are going to be prepared for that amount in the winery. You have built a winery that can accommodate the right amount of tank space, barrels have been ordered accordingly, and you're staffed with the right amount of people to handle making and selling that wine in any given vintage. But when that amount increases by 30% or even 50%, you might find yourself in a bit of a predicament and without the tools/space/people necessary to handle the extra tonnage. As space is at a premium, barrels have to be ordered months in advance, and cash flow around harvest is notoriously tight, many wineries look to sell off the extra fruit or even wine in some cases to keep the business solvent. This happens A LOT and come harvest it's always a game of chess as winemakers and vintners have to make game time decisions like this. Often it has little to do with the quality, and more to do with being financially sound. So, that's how wines like Yesterday, Radio Silence, and Editorial come to be. It's a once little known secret of the valley that Wine Access has done an incredible job leveraging at the behest of their clients who can score amazing deals on ultra-premium wines. The only problem is, once they're gone - they're gone. And they don't stick around for very long. I suspect by the time you're reading this the YESTERDAY wine is long sold out.
