Are political movements cults? Is former president Donald Trump "a cult leader"? Are political partisans "brainwashed" by the media? To answer these questions you have to start by figuring out exactly what a "cult" is. Religious studies professor Brad Stoddard explains the history of the term "cult," from its origins in the early 1600s when it refereed to certain forms of Christian worship through its meaning to sociologists. For sociologists and other scholars "cults" are religions that live in tension with their larger social context. Now, in popular culture, the term "cult" has come to mean some form of dangerous or negative religion. Stoddard challenges us to think about why people label this or that group as "a cult" and how it functions as a rhetorical term to disparage a particular group of people.
