It's time for a deep-dive into the unhinged world of Spike Chunsoft games! This video was selected by my July channel members, and explores what does and doesn't work when it comes to telling unhinged stories, using Danganronpa, Zero Escape, AI: The Somnium Files, and Master Detective Archives as our case studies. This is the longest video I ever made, and if you notice that there are some lacking graphics in some areas, there's a reason for that - namely, this video was melting my PC. I wanted to include more graphics of characters and events and stuff, but by time I finished with just editing the audio and b-roll it was taking 3-5 seconds for any sort of action to register with my editing software. Hopefully it's not too much of an issue for people, and if it is, I apologize, hopefully this video gets enough views that I can afford an upgrade lmao Also, just including this disclaimer from the video here as well: this is not a review or summary of these games. This is an exploration of storytelling techniques in video games, specifically focusing on what works (or doesn't) when it comes to telling unconventional, unhinged, or otherwise absurd stories. I love all of these games (with one notable exception, but we'll get to that when we get to that) and I hope people can recognize that a critique of a storytelling decision is not the same thing as saying the game is bad. Don't worry, if I think a game is actually bad, you'll know. Lastly, this video contains spoilers for all of these games, obviously. There are a ton of spoiler warnings throughout the video, including breaks in the video with time codes for future sections if you want to hear some stuff about the game but don't want it fully spoiled, and I encourage you to take advantage of those.
